How to Remove and Replace Old Door Locks

This is just a simple blog post with step by step instruction on how to exchange your old door knobs with new ones.

How to Unlock a Lock That Does Not Have a Key Hole.

Have you ever seen a lock that does not have a key hole but still has the ability to lock? What do you do if you accidentally lock yourself out with one such lock?

These types of locks are actually quite simple to pick. All you need is something that will fit through the small hole on the lock and cause the inner mechanism to turn a little bit. I would recommend a small screwdriver or a long thin nail.

What Do You Do:

  1. Insert screwdriver into hole on front face of door knob.
  2. Stop inserting the screwdriver when you feel that it has reach some sort of metal inside the lock.
  3. Turn the screwdriver .... and Poof!  The lock is unlocked

At the time I thought nothing of this because I don't often lock my door. After a while I when back to my room with its closed door. I reached down and turned the door knob and pushed.
Oddly the door knob turned but the door would still not open. That's when I remembered the the latch on the inside of the door. It must of sprung shut when the door slammed. So here I am a locksmith locked out of her own room.

Where to hide a "Hide-a-Key" on your Car

Well since my last post was on how to open your car using only a hanger and a stick (hammer). I thought I should spend some time showing my few readers out there different ways to hide a spare key on your car. So in those rare moments when you lose your keys or lock them in your car you can always open the doors without much hassle. For most people I would recommend purchasing a magnetic "Key- Holder".

Have you ever been so busy or distracted that you locked your keys in your car? I am remarkably great at this, I have a tendency to lock my keys in my car at some of the most  random places. Well as a locksmith you may think that I am always prepared for this, that I always have a hide a key, but I am blond for a reason. For some of you out there that are like me and don't want to pay $50-$80 to get a locksmith to come unlock your car (plus for me it becomes really embarrassing).  I am going to teach you how to unlock a car with a simple wire hanger and a stick.

Wafer Tumbler Lock

The Wafer Tumbler Lock is a type of lock that uses a set of flat wafers to prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is inserted. The wafer Tumbler locks operation is similar to the pin tumbler lock except for the Wafer lock has only a single piece (wafer) instead of stacked pins. If any wafer is insufficiently raised or raised too high, the wafer edge will be in one of the grooves, blocking rotation.

Pin Tumbler Lock

The Pin- Tumbler Lock is a cylinder based lock design that uses movable pins to prevent rotation of the plug. A Pin Tumbler lock uses a key with specific cuts to properly move pins upward and allow for the plug to rotate which in turn causes the locking bolt to retract.

Pin tumblers utilize a series of pins that are stack upon each other and pushed down by a spring. Each stack of pins must be properly raised to allow the stacked pins to separate at the shear line of contact. Once the pins are separated the plug can easily rotate freely allowing for the lock to be locked or unlocked.
