Where to hide a "Hide-a-Key" on your car

Where to hide a "Hide-a-Key" on your Car

Well since my last post was on how to open your car using only a hanger and a stick (hammer). I thought I should spend some time showing my few readers out there different ways to hide a spare key on your car. So in those rare moments when you lose your keys or lock them in your car you can always open the doors without much hassle. For most people I would recommend purchasing a magnetic "Key- Holder".

These are great for hiding a key on your car because the magnetic part secures the key to the body of the car and they are pretty durable. The magnetic "Key-Holder" will last you for a long time as long as you remember where you hide it.

Remember to only put the door key or trunk key in the "Key-Holder" put the ignition key on the inside of the vehicle. Never hide an ignition key on the exterior of the car! Should a thief find the ignition key, he will most likely be able to both open the doors and start your car; making a theft easier. Hide the ignition key in a less obvious place, such as underneath a removable ashtray or in the spare-tire compartment of your trunk.

Now if you own a car with a hitch you also have the option of purchasing a Hitch Safe which slides into your current standard 2" Hitch Receiver on your Truck, SUV or Van and is secured with two bolts. Now since this is much bigger the a magnetic key holder you can also hide spare keys, credit cards, and cash. All it takes is taking out a rubber stopper and dialing in a combination to gain access to your stuff.

Best places to attach the Magnetic Key Holder
  1. Place magnetic key holder behind a bumper on the metal frame of the car. If you can make sure that the key holder is place on top of the metal frame so that is not just being held on by the magnetic strip.
  2. Place the magnetic key holder behind the license plate in front of the car.
  3. Behind the tire well is a small metal ledge that is great for hiding a magnetic key holder
  4. Next to were you pump gas is also a good spot. If you have the right type of door to get to your gas tank you might not even need a magnetic key holder you might just be able to wedge the key onto the door or even duct tape it.

    1. If your car has the ignition key that has an electronic chip in it, all you must do is get a regular (unchipped) flat key to hide on the outside of your car.
Also, an obvious thing is to get a regular flat key (w/o the chip) and put it in your wallet.
I have done both in case I double-dope myself and lock my wallet inside the car.

  10. nice to read dozens of locksmith ads. EXCEPT when I locked the keys in during 115 degree heat and it took 2 hours for locksmith to even call me back. I am going today to get a magnetic key holder.

  11. The magnetic key holders do fall off, especially if you are driving gravel roads. Also be aware that a lot of vehicles are now made plastic instead of metal, so it is very hard to find a metal spot on my car and it is a 2000.

  12. I always seem to lock myself out of my car. I have been looking for some good options to prevent this and the hide-a-key seems like a good idea. I'm curious how many car thieves know to check for these spare keys. I might get the one with a lock on it. ht tp://www.aegislocksmith.ca/commercial.html

  13. Forget the magnetic key holders, they fall off. Believe me I know. Use a zip tie or strong piece of plastic coated wire and find a piece of metal in the car frame that has a hole in it or wrap it around a thinner piece. I use wire because it is strong, weather proof, reusable and cheap.

  17. I have a 2015 Subaru Forester. Both keys (the ignition key fob & the valet key) are "chipped". If copies are made of either key, the copies will be "chipless" and will set off the alarm when used for opening the door. My old Mazda's (2002) spare key was not "chipped". I could leave the "chipped" key inside the car, take the spare key on a wrist coil, spend the day at the beach...not worrying about getting the spare key wet...., and then get back into the car without setting off any alarms. I will not be a repeat Subaru buyer.

  18. I have locked my keys in the car so many times I can't count , my solution was to go to the big box store and get one of those key boxes that have the push button combination. It would be used for a house key but I get the kind that goes over the door knob( looks like a padlock).
The best spot to install the key box is on the tow hooks or the trailer hitch where the chains attach. Works great !!!!!

  20. Morning everyone........here's a tip a good friend of mine (engineer) told me about years ago. Take the vehicle key (NOT the chipped key fob/device) that opens the car's door, have a copy made at the local hardware store, etc. Once that key is made, take a drill with a bit just slightly larger than the diameter of the bolt/screw holding the back license plate onto the frame, make sure those bolts now are teflon/plastic (ones that won't rust) and, again, the new key you just had made, that hole you drilled into it is slightly larger than the teflon/plastic bolt/screw, place the key BEHIND the license plate as you start to put back the screw/bolt on (preferably a screw/bolt with a SLOT in its profile on the head). Hand tighten the screw/bolt, then use say, a coin to gently tighten down that screw/bolt, finish securing the license plate with the other screw/bolt..........you now have a key that opens the car's door, secured with the license plate bolt that WON'T rust if its teflon/plastic, you can use when ever the situation arises, only loosening it with a coin you have in your pocket/purse/whatever.........this may seem like a bit of work, but NO one (unless they physically see you access this key) knows where this key is except you or ones you tell, that is available when you need it. Hope this is helpful.

  25. With a chipped key, (keyless entry/ignition type) wrap it in 2 layers of kitchen tin foil then place into a magnet key holder. (No need to remove the battery from the key).
Mount the magnet key holder on outside of vehicle.
The tin foil blocks the radio signal.
This worked on my Subaru XV 2017.

  30. Attach a spare door key to the back of your license plate with a big glop of silicone caulk. Add a strip of duct tape over that to hold it in place until the silicone cures, no need to go back and remove the duct tape later, but it's you're choice. I prefer black silicone, like chimney caulk, because it is a bit more discrete.
Locked out? Rip the glop/key off the back of the license plate, pull the key out of the silicone.
